Kate del Castillo is FearlessKate del Castillo welcomes challenges. What further proof is necessary than leaving a superstar career in Mexican soap operas to start anew in the Hollywood pursuit of mainstream success. Fear does not seem to be in her genetic makeup.
Kate’s career might have been predetermined. As the daughter of established actor Eric del Castillo, acting seemed like a logical option. Opportunities abound when you’re beautiful, talented and spend the early days of childhood in soap opera sets. She followed her destiny achieving starring roles in some of Latin America’s most successful soap operas. Marriage to a prominent soccer star followed and a traditional storyline was in place. But things aren’t always what they seem. Six years ago she left the security blanket of Televisa to start at the beginning. “I wasn’t finding what I wanted for my career. It was going to be difficult to get roles in Mexico because my name was so associated with soaps. And soaps are so big and seen by so many people and the truth is that there is not much you can do in them. If a producer or director sees you in a soap opera they can’t really see your range.”
She left everything behind. The timing was right as she was in the midst of a high profile divorce. “In soaps I was always the protagonist. But if you’re true actress sometimes you want to take a risk, have a challenge. I realized I wasn’t happy. So I left, they offered me ‘American Family,’ then I got a manager and an agent and I realized I liked being here. I would have liked to continue working in film in my country but it didn’t happen. I miss the security of having a job. In Los Angeles uncertainty is constant, but it’s also something I like.”
Since her arrival in Los Angeles she has done over a dozen films, mostly independents. Early this year she starred in the highest grossing Spanish language film in history ‘La Misma Luna,’ The film received the ALMA Special Achievement Award for Outstanding Spanish Language Motion Picture. Her role in the film garnered her international accolades and numerous awards. “Working on that film was one of the best experiences in my life,” she says.
When it comes to relationships she says “As actors we are passionate and wear our feelings on our sleeve. I’ve become much more sensitive. My marriage and divorce was something very painful in the moment but today is in the past. I still believe in love and I’m sure I’ll fall in love again. I’m sure there’s a man out there for me.”
